2025 All-In Project

<SOL>

<sol>

<SOL>

<SOL>

One shop is returning children's first loves.

On a busy suburban street in Sydney, Australia, there is a shop that people don't see very often nowadays. The shop, Doll Hospital, will happily repair dolls, teddy bears, and any other toy brought in to be given a new lease on life. The shop was opened in 1913 by Harold Chapman, Sr., and it has passed down through the family to Geoff Chapman, Harold's grandson. So far, Doll Hospital has repaired more than three million toys.
In the beginning, Harold Chapman, Sr. had no plans to open a toy repair shop. He ran a small gift shop. Then a shipment of dolls for his shop was damaged on its way from Japan. He fixed them himself and discovered there was much demand for toy repair services, so he expanded his business. In the 1930s, his son Harold Chapman Jr. took over the shop and relocated it to its current location. When World War II broke out, their repair business skyrocketed. Due to wartime restrictions, it became very difficult to get new toys into Australia. People turned to repair shops like Doll Hospital to fix cherished toys that had been broken. At its height, the shop had six workshops and 70 people working there.
Today, Doll Hospital has fallen on hard times. Modern consumers are more likely to buy a new doll when the old one wears out. Most of Doll Hospital's customers these days are adults, often elderly people, who are restoring a beloved childhood toy. The toys are often family heirlooms to pass down to a younger generation. This makes Geoff Chapman one of the few shop owners who can be proud of making his customers cry, which they often do when reunited with their childhood toy before passing it on.

1. Which of the following is NOT true about Doll Hospital?
(A) It's a family-run business.
(B) It only repairs dolls.
(C) The shop is over 100 years old.
(D) The shop has done over three million repairs.
2. What made Harold Chapman, Sr. open Doll Hospital?
(A) His neighbors kept asking him to fix their toys.
(B) His daughter broke her favorite doll, so he fixed it.
(C) The toy repair services were much in demand.
(D) A Japanese company offered to become a business partner.
3. Why was business so good during World War II?
(A) It wasn't easy to get new toys during the war.
(B) Soldiers sent dolls from abroad.
(C) Australia became wealthier during the war.
(D) The shop moved to a new location.
4. Why isn't Doll Hospital doing well anymore?
(A) Nobody buys toys anymore.
(B) There are fewer people living in Sydney.
(C) Geoff Chapman has retired.
(D) People buy new toys instead of fixing old ones.

Sport stacking has been around since the 1980s, but it has been gaining in popularity recently.

Have you heard of sport stacking? Since one of the meanings of stack is to arrange something unfairly, this is not an illegal gambling activity even though it may sound like it. Instead, sport stacking is one of the hottest new game trends sweeping the planet. _(1)_ The goal is to stack plastic cups in a certain sequence as fast as possible. _(2)_
Sport stacking has been around Southern California since the early 1980s. After catching on there, it was eventually featured on national television. That's how it caught the imagination of a high school physical education teacher named Bob Fox. _(3)_ The idea was so well received that Fox quickly turned the activity into a real sport, complete with rules, standardized equipment, and its own international governing body. There are organized teams on almost every continent, and the sport is growing rapidly.
Like every sport, stacking offers its players real benefits. _(4)_ A study at the University of Wisconsin showed a 30 percent increase in all of these measurements in stackers. Stacking is useful training for other activities that require the good use of both hands. _(5)_ Kids don't need convincing about the benefits of sport stacking. They love it, and it's also fun for the whole family.

(A) Hand-eye coordination, quickness, and ambidexterity, which is defined as performing equally well with both sides of the body, have all been documented as advantages of participating in the sport.
(B) He started a small, home-based business to promote sport stacking as a resource for physical education teachers.
(C) Also called cup stacking and speed stacking, sport stacking is a real sport played by teams and individuals.
(D) One such example is playing a musical instrument.
(E) Thousands of stackers can be seen on YouTube showing off their skills and fastest times.

a. 空格前一句提到 "... stacking is one of the hottest new game trends sweeping the planet."(…… Also called cup stacking and speed stacking,..."(這項運動
individual n.

a. 空格前一句提到 "The goal is to stack plastic cups in a certain sequence as fast as possible."(這項運動的目的是要用最快的速度將塑膠杯以某種特定的順序疊起來。),而選項 (E) 的句子延伸說明此運動所需的技巧 "... showing off their skills and fastest times."(……
show off 展示;賣弄
Ralph loves to show off his cooking skills when his friends come over.

Currently, some biometric devices that use cameras or other sensors to identify _(8)_ motorists are already being used in some vehicles, such as certain models of Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. When these cars detect drowsy drivers, a beep is set off or an icon of a coffee cup is triggered as a type of alert.
